How to Start a Podcast

From someone who has never started a podcast and historically is a quitter.

I am at a coffee shop listening to a Spotify playlist called “Creative Writing.” I’ve just googled, “podcast questions to ask,” a search that has provided a very large list of basic and obvious questions I could have come up with myself. I’m intimidated. I’ve decided that for my first long form podcast I’m going to interview myself, both as a warm up for what it’ll be like when I interview other people and also as an introduction to myself for those of you who may not know me very well. This week, I’ve had more than a few friends ask me what my podcast is going to be about and my answer has been vague, “well I’m gonna interview people…” It’s called Yeah, I’d Hang out with Her, vainly highlighting my assumption that I’m fun and that you wanna hang out with me, so the tone of the podcast is, well, hanging out. I love gossip. I love TO gossip. My very favorite podcast of all time is Normal Gossip. It’s fun, it’s light, it’s relaxing and it’s hilarious and if you haven’t heard of it, you should absolutely go listen to every single episode. Anyway, I’ve been sitting at my computer staring blankly at a YouTube tutorial on how to use GarageBand to edit podcasts and it is so boring I could claw out my eyes. I’m worried I’ll never figure it out. But the fear of not knowing how has stopped me from doing so many things in the past and like I’ve said already in a past post, we’re not doing that anymore. We are not stopping ourselves. I’m not going to use my messy house, this boring tutorial I can’t pay attention to, my longing for oysters and a cocktail at 3pm as an excuse… we’re just gonna record something and keep it moving. How do you start a podcast? You just fucking start one, I guess. In the meantime, I wanted to say hello and give you a quick little blog to read. In my mind, it’s taking me forever to figure this whole podcast thing out and I keep thinking everyone’s wondering if this is just gonna be another cute thing Brittany was into for a week and then abandoned but that’s my own narcissistic insecurity I felt the need to let you in on. In the famous words of my mother, “nobody’s lookin’ at you, get outta the car.” Here I am, gettin’ outta the car, see ya in a few days.
