In 2011 I moved to Los Angeles and did not have a car so I spent a lot of time at home on my computer. Theoretically I was writing, realistically I was becoming obsessed with YouTube. I spent hours watching everything from screaming goats to makeup tutorials. Eventually, I found myself immersed in the world of the beauty blogger, mainly the British beauty bloggers. Girls who filmed their make-up routines, monthly favorites and, best of all, their pamper evenings (please hear that with a beautiful English accent, “pam-puh evenings”.) These girls loooooved their beauty brands but the one they loved the most by far was Lush.
That I knew of Lush from my time studying abroad in London back in 2004 made me feel very posh and in the know. But besides understanding that a face mask was good for my zits, I had no concept of pampering myself with products. The power of the bath bomb was foreign to me until the British beauty bloggers showed me the way. They’d post ‘haul videos,’ unboxing massive loads of Lush. I wanted my bath water pink and purple! I wanted to feel soft and glittery after soaking! I WANTED TO PAM-PUH MYSELF! And so, at the dawn of the Influencer Era, I was influenced to buy a Lush load of my very own. Quickly, bath bombs became a part of my identity. I was a bather, just like the British beauty bloggers.
Unfortunately, while I was absolutely thrilled to be sitting in hot pink and orange water, there were certain parts of me that did not love my rainbow color baths. Parts that have a pH balance to maintain…?
… … …?
Oh hell y’all, my vag did NOT love a Lush bath bomb. It took me years and a lot of probiotics to figure this out but once I stopped using them, the problem was solved. I saved a lot of money and hassle.
But my pamper evenings were not the same. My baths were boring. Unscented Epsom salts just weren’t cutting it.
Enter, this week’s Good Thing:
My dear friend, Lauren, gifted me a jug of this Mustard Bath for my birthday a few years ago and I have never looked back. It will turn your bath yellow. It smells very menthol-y. It will leave a film. It’s all worth it for the night of sleep you’ll get after. If you want to detox, if you’re getting a cold, if your muscles are sore, if you just wanna relax, this stuff is the best (and it has never disrupted my pH…sorry but it’s important info.) It is absolutely my holy grail bath additive and, as you can tell, I am an expert in baths. If you love a pamper evening like me, you absolutely must try this stuff. And if you hate bathing, sorry I’ll give you another recipe in a week or so.
Have a wonderful, relaxing weekend. Make sure to pam-puh yourself!
